Living with one working kidney. Here's what that means.

Many people born with one kidney, kids and adults, live healthy, active lives. Knowing what to watch for helps protect that kidney for the long run, and you don't have to figure it out alone.

What is a solitary kidney?

A solitary kidney means having only one working kidney instead of two. The one kidney often grows a little larger to take on the extra work.

Some people are born with only one kidney. Others are born with two, but only one works well, or one is removed during surgery.

How it’s usually found

  • On a routine pregnancy ultrasound, often in the second trimester

  • After birth, during tests for a urine infection

  • Sometimes by chance, during a scan for something else

What care usually looks like

Most people with one kidney, children and adults, need regular check-ups rather than treatment. The goal is to spot any changes early.

Your care team may:

  • Check blood pressure at visits

  • Test urine for protein, an early sign the kidney is working hard

  • Do blood tests and ultrasounds over time to see how the kidney is working

Your team can also help with everyday questions, like which medicines are safe for you or your child and which activities are fine.

Questions to ask at your next appointment

  • Is the kidney healthy and growing as expected?

  • How often should check-ups and tests happen?

  • Which medicines should we avoid or use with care?

  • Are there any sports or activities we should talk about?

  • Who should we call if we’re worried between appointments?
